The Wildlife Management Area in Chisago County, just outside of North Branch, is expanding, adding 108 acres to the existing 223 acres. This Wildlife Management Area was established in honor of the late Janet Johnson, who died in 1999 of a malignant brain tumor at the young age of 59. This area was set up in her honor due to her being such an environment advocate.
The Lessard Sams Grant was awarded to Chisago County by the Outdoor Heritage Fund; this money will be used to acquire the new land. The $577,000 grant will be used to secure the land in partnership with the DNR, and will be owned by the Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources and maintained by the Janet Johnson Memorial Wildlife Management Area.
This expansion is great news for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. This land can be appreciated as it was found, without shopping malls, gas stations, and parking lots. It's always nice to get out and enjoy the great outdoors and this area can help one enjoy that.
Hunting is allowed in most of the area, but overnight camping is not.
